Metacritic Website Redesign

Role(s): Lead Visual Designer, User Researcher, UX Designer

I was brought to Red Ventures (owner of the Metacritic brand at the time) to help lead the redesign for a revitalized metacritic.com experience ready for the modern day. Metacritic has not seen a significant redesign basically since it was launched about 20 years ago. The site has served a very utilitarian purpose and its users have come to know what to expect for many years now.

The goal was to give users a fresh experience while still maintaining the detail, statistical reliability and editorial integrity of the Metacritic brand.

My Responsibilities:

• User Research

• Visual Design

• Prototyping

• UX Design

The biggest step to take was finally transitioning the brand to a responsive web format. This involved a complete rebuild of the underlying tech as well so it could support this new responsive framework. There was additionally a strong emphasis put on rekindling the brand image a bit as you'll see even in the above imagery. We didn't want to rebrand Metacritic but giving it a facelift was part of the redesign in a big way.

This carried over to the interface styling and display of our critics content into something that we felt could stand up against the other aggregators and editorial entities on the web today

A large portion of work came from a heavy set of user research initiatives led by my partner and Senior Product Manager at the time as well. Together with our team of Engineers, Product Leaders and Designers we tested and prototyped our designs and improved on them at every turn.

Lets Go In-Depth

This is a currently ongoing redesign set to be released sometime in the near future. My work on it was substantial and I remain very proud of it all. There is alot to share about where we got it to and the ways we got there as a team. If you would like to hear more send me an email, DM or whatever works best for you and we can set up a screen share to go over them in more depth.
